Modern stamped speed hooks are usually larger than I want.
Many are practical, but the proportions often feel heavy, and the finishing can be rough. We have also experienced, more than once, hooks that damaged or cut the laces through use.
Machined hooks do exist.
But they tend to feel too solid, too heavy, and different in character from the small, quiet hardware found on early American boots.
What I wanted was not simply a smaller hook.
I wanted a hook with the precision, durability, and atmosphere of old boot hardware — the kind that is difficult to find in commercially available hardware today.
So more than a year ago, we began looking for someone who could help us make it.
Someone willing to understand this small obsession, discuss the details, and work with us toward a shape that felt right.
After repeated conversations and prototypes, it is finally beginning to take form.
Each hook begins as a piece of flat brass sheet and is gradually formed into its final shape through a number of manufacturing processes.
It is not finished yet.
We are still testing strength, proportion, and long-term durability.
But this small part represents something important to Rustroops:
a boot is shaped not only by its last, leather, or sole, but also by the quiet details that most people may never notice.
